I woke up this morning and was in the mood to wear a dress. My sister thought I was nuts, but I explained how comfortable they were and how I liked traveling in skirts/dresses. Off we went on our merry way!
We decided to stop off at a Bourbon distillery, specifically Four Roses Distillery, because 1) when in the world would my sister ever come back to Kentucky to do that? And 2) Four Roses because I had heard great things about the tour and bourbon from other visitors. The Distillery is beautiful with Spanish mission style architecture. When we arrived, there were no other visitors, so we got our own private tour of the Distillery.
We went in to see the distilling process – from the mash, to the fermenting bins, to the distillation area. When we went to the fermenting areas, the vats are 2 stories high, so to be able to see the fermentation process, we were on the upper level, with wooden floors. The wooden slats were not flush with each other so there were open areas about a ½ inch to ¾ of an inch wide between boards. Suddenly, with a flash of insight, I looked down and what did I see? Some worker trying to take a peek under my skirt! I immediately grabbed my dress so that there was nothing to see. What was worse was that he kept following me around as we walked from area to area!
I thought I had lost him for a bit, only to see him again and pointed him out to my sister, indicating that the perv was following me around. Our cute older lady guide had been a bit puzzled as to why I had been holding my dress together and also why I kept looking down. My sister let our guide know why we were looking down at the lower levels and I explained that the perv had been following me around trying to catch a peek. She immediately exclaimed, “Oh my goodness! No wonder why they tell us to wear slacks!” We all had a good chuckle over that.
The tour continued onward and we also got to try the white dog – the alcohol as it came of the distillation process (130 proof) and after it had been further strengthened to 140 proof. The initial white dog still had a bit of the mash flavor and aroma (like bread) while the 140 proof was essentially pure alcohol. Overall, it was a nice tour (I also have liked the tours at Maker’s Mark and Heaven Hill) – all the different tours always teach you something new about bourbon. And the bourbon? It was quite good. The single barrel bourbon was especially good! Spicy and caramel-y. Yum!
Here's our little big truck at the distillery:
